“I Need to Learn English”

Though the United States has no official national language, many new immigrants closely associate learning the English language with their new homes. For LCNV learner Natalie, knowing English is a key part of her identity. “I love America…That’s why I need to learn English,” she writes. Read her story, below.

If you would like to help LCNV learners like Natalie, consider volunteering with the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia. You can find out how to get involved at lcnv.org/volunteer.

“My name is Natalie. I’m from Vietnam. I have lived in Annandale VA, for almost three years with my husband. I love America because I live here. That’s why I need to learn English. When I’m learning English, it helps me with everything. I can go shopping. It’s good for my job and to apply for citizenship to become an American. I hope that when I have children I can take care [of them] and help my children with homework every day. I like to travel around the world with my family. I can go to a movie on the weekend with my friends in my free time. I like to watch TV, listen to music and read the news.

Now I love my life but I need to study more English. I feel happy living in the United States.”
