The English Empowerment Center was founded in 1962 by a group of committed volunteers who were dedicated to improving the lives of people in our community through English literacy and education. Today, volunteers continue to be the vehicle for delivering high quality educational programs, enabling us to serve 1,500 adult learners annually. Volunteers serve in a range of roles, including teacher, class aide, supplemental tutor, translator, interpreter, student advisor, librarian, office and program support personnel, board member, and community ambassador.

To get involved, volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, be proficient in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English, and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Prior teaching experience and native English fluency is not required. Training and support will be provided.

If you are passionate about adult education and helping immigrants settle into life in this region, consider joining our team of over 500 volunteers who are helping to empower adults in Northern Virginia to participate more fully and confidently in their communities. You can make a difference in an individual's life, a family's opportunities, and a community's future.
